The Perfect Guide to Visiting Topes de Collantes in Cuba

Nestled in the heart of Cuba, Topes de Collantes is a natural paradise that offers a blend of breathtaking landscapes, lush forests, and stunning waterfalls. Located in the Escambray Mountains, this protected area is a haven for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. This guide will help you explore the best places in Topes de Collantes, including the enchanting Vegas Grande Waterfall, and provide practical tips on how to get there from Trinidad.

Getting to Topes de Collantes from Trinidad

Before diving into the beauty and adventures of Topes de Collantes, let’s talk about how to get there. Trinidad is the closest major town to the park and the best starting place in my opinion, especially if you want to minimise journey time and maximise time on the ground! It’s the perfect gateway to this mountain sanctuary, making it easy to embark on a day trip or a longer adventure.

By Car

One of the most convenient ways to reach Topes de Collantes from Trinidad is by car. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes, covering a distance of about 20 kilometres. Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore the area at your own pace, but driving in Cuba is not for everyone! The roads can be steep and winding, so make sure to take your time and drive carefully. Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages and coffee plantations, giving you a taste of the local lifestyle.

By Taxi

If you prefer not to drive, taking a taxi is a hassle-free option. Taxis are readily available in Trinidad but you will need to negotiate a round-trip rate with the taxi driver as it will be difficult to get a taxi back. The taxis are fairly inexpensive and you can even get your Casa Particulares host to arrange this for you to avoid negotiating rates (especially if you don’t speak Spanish)! We did it through our Casa Particulares as it was easy and convenient. This option allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery without worrying about navigating the mountain roads.

By Tour

If you want a guided experience book a tour through one of the local travel agencies in Trinidad or your Casa Particulares. Tours often include transportation, a guide, and sometimes even meals. This option is ideal if you prefer a structured itinerary and want to learn more about the park’s history, flora, and fauna from a knowledgeable guide. However on the downside you will be limited to what parts of Topes de Collantes you can explore and how long you spend at each place.

By Bus

For budget-conscious travellers, taking a bus is a viable alternative. There are regular buses from Trinidad to Topes de Collantes. The bus ride takes a bit longer, around 1 to 1.5 hours, but it’s an excellent opportunity to experience local travel and interact with fellow passengers. Check the bus schedule in advance as services may vary.

Exploring Topes de Collantes

Once you’ve arrived at Topes de Collantes, the real adventure begins. The park covers an extensive area of 200 square kilometers, featuring a diverse range of ecosystems, from dense forests to open meadows. Here are some of the must-visit spots within Topes de Collantes:

1. Vegas Grande Waterfall

Vegas Grande waterfall is not for the faint-hearted but it is absolutely worth the gruelling trek there and back! It was my favourite place in Topes de Collantes and we were fortunate to have it entirely to ourselves without even leaving that early to get there!

The Hike to Vegas Grande

To reach the waterfall, you’ll need to embark on a challenging hike. The trailhead is located near the visitor centre, where you can get a map and some helpful tips from the park staff. The hike is approximately 4 kilometres round trip, and it’s advisable to wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the path can be steep and slippery, especially after rain. You should also set out early as it is extremely hot during the day and you will find it more difficult to hike in this condition! We started the hike around 10am and the heat was already too much!

As you descend into the lush forest, you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of tropical birds and the rustling of leaves. The trail winds through dense vegetation, crossing small streams and offering glimpses of the mountains beyond. It’s a good idea to bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. If you fancy taking a swim in the waterfall to cool off you should also wear your swimsuit (there is nowhere to change there so it is better to come wearing your swimsuit).

At the Waterfall

The sight of the Vegas Grande Waterfall is a reward in itself. The cool, refreshing water is perfect for a swim after your hike. The pool at the base of the waterfall is deep enough for swimming but has shallow areas where you can sit and enjoy the natural hydro-massage. Trust me the cool water will be the best way to prepare yourself for the steep hike back (and it really is steep)!

2. Salto del Caburní

Another stunning waterfall in Topes de Collantes is Salto del Caburní. This waterfall is one of the tallest in Cuba, with a drop of about 62 meters. The hike to Salto del Caburní is more challenging than the one to Vegas Grande, but the reward is worth the effort. The trail takes around 2 to 3 hours round trip, passing through rugged terrain, rocky paths, and scenic viewpoints.

At the base of the waterfall, there’s a natural pool where you can swim and relax. The surrounding area is perfect for a picnic, allowing you to enjoy the serene environment. Make sure to bring sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, and snacks for the journey.

If you don’t have time to do both waterfalls then choose this one if you can, although it is a longer hike.

3. Sendero la Batata

Sendero La Batata is a hidden gem in Topes de Collantes, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The park features a series of underground rivers and caves that you can explore. The highlight is the Batata Cave, where a river flows through the cave, creating a magical and unique atmosphere.

Guided tours are available, providing insights into the history and geology of the area. As you navigate through the cave, you’ll see stunning rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. The tour also includes a visit to a natural spring, where you can take a dip in the refreshing waters. It’s worth getting a guide for Sendero La Batara so you don’t get lost and so you can go to the best spots.

4. Casa de Café

For coffee lovers, a visit to Casa de Café is a must. This coffee house is located in the heart of Topes de Collantes and offers a glimpse into the region’s rich coffee culture. You can take a tour of the coffee plantation, learn about the coffee-making process, and sample some of the finest Cuban coffee. The tour includes a visit to the coffee museum, where you can see traditional coffee-making equipment and learn about the history of coffee in Cuba. After the tour, relax on the terrace with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, enjoying the panoramic views of the mountains.

5. Museo de Arte Cubano

Art enthusiasts should not miss the Museo de Arte Cubano, located within the Topes de Collantes complex. This museum showcases a collection of Cuban art, including paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. The exhibits highlight the work of prominent Cuban artists and provide a glimpse into the country’s vibrant art scene. It makes for a great rainy day activity. The museum is set in a beautiful building surrounded by lush gardens, making it a pleasant place to spend an afternoon. Take your time to explore the exhibits, and don’t forget to check out the gift shop for unique souvenirs.

6. Parque Guanayara

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, visit Parque Guanayara, a less frequented section of Topes de Collantes. The park features several trails, including the “Centinelas del Río Melodioso” (Sentinels of the Melodious River) trail, which takes you through lush forests, past waterfalls, and along the banks of the Río Melodioso. The trail ends at the Casa de la Gallega, a rustic lodge where you can enjoy a meal and relax before heading back.
